4 Heartfelt Ways to express gratitude

Have you noticed how you are often motivated to do even more for people who are appreciative of your gifts or acts of kindness?

Ungrateful people can make us feel weird. Sometimes, we regret giving the gift or even wonder if we did something wrong.

We never want to appear entitled or ungrateful, yet with our busy lives, sometimes we forget to tell others how much we appreciate them. Before we get too far into 2026, why not take a moment to look back and thank those who contributed to your life in 2025.

Below are some simple things you can do to immediately bring heartfelt warmth to those givers.

A written note

Thoughtful note writing is almost a lost art in our society. But nothing says “Thank you” like taking the time to sit down and write out your thanks on a card.

Be specific. Instead of just saying “Thank you,” write the specific gift. Also compliment the giver while you are at it by saying something like “You’re a great friend.”

Be kind, even if you didn’t particularly like the gift. They spent their money on you and may have spent a lot of effort picking out something they thought you would enjoy. You are appreciating their kindness and thoughtfulness.

A phone call or video chat

We’re fortunate today that we can call or video chat to practically anyone, no matter where they are in the world. This is a great way to thank people for their involvement in your life and wish them a happy new year! Another great option is to record the video and send it.

A social media shout out

Public praise on a social media platform is always heartwarming to the recipient because you are lifting them up in front of their peers. Explain what they did that was so special.

Send a picture of you using the gift.

If the gift was clothes, send a picture to the giver of you wearing it. If it was something for your house, send one of it displayed. If the gift was a gift card, send a picture of what you purchased with it. If for a restaurant, let them see you enjoying the night out.

Be prompt

Ideally, the messages should be sent within two weeks of receiving the gift.

These small acts make the giver feel appreciated and strengthened your bond with them.

Don’t forget God

Remember the one who gives us all our gifts – the Lord himself. Just as we like to feel appreciated, so does He, as we are made in his likeness and image. And it makes Him happy!

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
