Guard Your Heart

If you are like me, you love reading and listening to teachings from others who know much about different aspects of life and are willing to share their knowledge with others. I think it’s especially cool to learn from someone who has already passed. Even though they are deceased , their thoughts and ideas written years ago still teach us today.

With the invention of podcast an entirely new world has now opened up for us to learn.  We can now easily easily listen to teachings on our commute to and from work, while taking our morning walk. At night if our tired eyes are begging us to put down a book and go to sleep, we can plug in earphones to listen to something a little while longer.

I have found some new friends on podcasts and You Tube including great yoga and workout instructors, nutrition experts, and some interesting influencers who have shared many good insights that have helped me tremendously in my life. However, I began to notice something about some of these intellects. While they were all specialist in their fields, and were freely sharing useful information, somewhere in their talk that would eventually mention the “E” word. As smart as they were, many believed that man simply evolved from nothing instead of having been created by God.

How can these people be so smart and yet not believe in God?  The Bible calls such people fools. (Psalm 14:1) Do I really want to take life from someone who doesn’t believe this basic truth that is so evident all around us?

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Romans 1:20

Every day new human beings are born, new vegetation springs forth from the earth, and the animal kingdom keeps bringing forth its young. This all happens right in front of our eyes and with little effort from man.

Sure we know how eggs are fertilized to start the process, but we don’t know what makes the cells come together to form eyes, ears, etc. and a compete digestive and nervous system with a heart and circulatory system to keep the body living for decades. That remains a mystery. Scientist say that it’s a miracle that even one child comes to full development and birth. Each of us is a uniquely designed living miracle!

Our enormous universe

It’s possible that our our vast universe is even continually expanding. We have yet to find it’s end. The deeper scientist go. the more they find. It’s a mystery yet to be discovered. Our feeble minds get overwhelmed just thinking about it. It seems God has given us just enough intellect to believe in Him, but not enough to understand him completely.

We were made to trust God. Paul tells us in I Corinthians that now we know only in part. Although it’s human nature to want to explore, learn and grow, as we should. we will never know everything in this life.

The Bible tells us that there in wisdom in a multitude of counselors. It’s wise to learn from others. People who have studied hard to learned their craft or area of expertise desire to be heard. Yet, as followers of Christ we need to be aware of the world view of those we are following so that we are not led astray. Since we can’t possibly listen to every podcast or read every book that is published, we should be selective in who we choose to follow.

When an author or speaker starts talking about evolution as fact they immediately loose credibility with me.

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed.

Proverbs 15:22

Trustworthy leaders

Currently, one of my favorite podcast is from Pastor Gary Hamrick of Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia. I follow a yearly Bible reading plan and Pastor Gary teaches through the Bible book by book.  If I’m reading Luke Chapter 8, for example, I can pull up a sermon from his website on that particular chapter. He usually gives a little history surrounding the story, expands on what the scripture is wanting to teach us and relates it to our 21st century life. He’s great at adding a little humor to the mix, making his sermons not only informative, but interesting. Because of his teaching, I’m not only understanding the scriptures better, I’m learning valuable life lessons daily.

The warning

In 1 Timothy 4 we are warned that in the last days some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. With so much information readily available to us from all kinds of people with different beliefs, perspectives and backgrounds, it’s easy to see how that can happen. Therefore, let’s be careful to guard our heart as we search, learn and grow.

The Bible says that in the last days knowledge shall be increased. (Daniel 12:4.). We are the first generation to have such a vast wealth of knowledge readily available right in the palm of our hand. While we take advantage of this great opportunity that God has given us to expand our mind, let’s be sure to guard our heart along the way.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
